Abbotsford Mayor George Ferguson has announced that he will not seek re-election in November's civic election.
Ferguson, 83, issued an official statement this morning (Monday), in which he thanked Abbotsford citizens for their support over the past four decades.
Ferguson was Abbotsford's mayor for 31 years before losing to Mary Reeves in 2002. He ran against Reeves three years later, taking back his seat at the head of the city's council table.
Ferguson said yesterday that he would not speak further on his decision not to run in 2008, at least until a later date.
In his statement, which was also sent to members of council and the city manager, Ferguson said: "This is to inform you that I am not seeking re-election as your mayor in the upcoming civic election.
"My heartfelt thank-you to all the citizens of Abbotsford who supported me during the last 40 years."
Ferguson also thanked various members of city councils, his colleagues on local and regional boards, City of Abbotsford staff, MPs and MLAs.
"It has been a great honour and privilege to serve you, the citizens of Abbotsford," he continued.
"We together created today's beautiful city in the country we can be proud of. Much more has to be done. I will always be available it needed."
Confirmed so far for Abbotsford's mayoral race for Nov. 15 are Alvin Epp, Gerda Peachey, George Peary and Case Verstraten. The deadline for nominations is Friday.
