Volunteers make difference

Volunteers are at the heart of MCC – from the thrift shops to the warehouse to festivals, fairs and sales.
At the MCC Festival, volunteers help set up tables, chairs and stall areas. They staff food and crafts booths, help serve, run the auctions, organize the children’s area, provide music and entertainment, and more.
Erwin Cornelsen has volunteered for years with the MCC Festival. He’s a fixture at his woodcrafts booth.
People eagerly snap up his wooden plates that are carved with the phrase “Give us this day our daily bread,” wooden blocks for children, and chairs and tables recycled from broken furniture donated by a Vancouver furniture store.
“Recycling and saving our environment, as well as sharing and helping people in need, gives me a deep satisfaction,” Cornelsen said.
Young people make significant contributions as well. Last year, a booth run by kids from the Peace Mennonite Church in Richmond sold prayer bracelets and “hug bug boxes” – hugs in a box that sold for whatever the buyer thought a hug was worth. Their booth made over $1,500 to help MCC’s work around the world.
