What do Jennifer Aniston, Meg Ryan and Kate Moss have in common besides fame? They are trendsetters!

Have you ever wondered who’s behind their gorgeous do’s and where their inspiration comes from?

One of the most influential hair designers is Sally Hershberger, who created the unforgettable shag on Meg Ryan.

Kate Moss has also been coiffed by her talented hands. You would be interested to know some of her inspiration comes from art and architecture.

Most stylists would agree that trends are a culmination of great ideas that come from makeup artists, hair colourists, photographers and fashion.

Speaking of fashion, curls made their way right off the catwalk for 2009. Pure glamour is definitely in, with an Audrey Hepburn style mixed with a retro twist.

Whether it’s a pixie posh or a bohemian rage of waves, there is a lot of texture going on for 2009. Straight hair will continue to be in style but loose spirals or tight ringlets will take centre stage for 2009.

How do you achieve those beautiful waves?

The type of curling iron that you opt for will depends on the type of curl that you want and the type of hair that you have.

Curling irons with small barrels create tight curls while those with large barrels produce waves.

Although fine hair curls easily at lower temperatures, you’ll need an iron with higher heat settings if you have thick, coarse hair.

COLOUR

There are lots of ways to update or change your look. One of the easiest and most obvious is to change your hair colour. Soft blonds, rich reds and striking brunettes are a great place to start.

Soft blonds, beautiful brunettes and rich reds: forget the chunky colourful streaks. They’re out and earth tones are in.

Consider a natural true-to-life colour with hints of vanilla for blonds, golden highlights for brunettes and reds with golden highlights.

This season’s hair colour trends are more natural than ever.

BLOND

One of the most popular blonds of the moment is an expensive look with natural finish. You can achieve this by weaving different shades of blond – such as sable, mink and vanilla – through the hair.

The “new” blond is always paired with lowlights. Tone-on-tone colouring – like blond on blond – adds smart sophistication to any shading.

BRUNETTE

Harsh black, purple and stripey highlights are gone from the scene. For the perfect tone-on-tone brunette, get subtle golden highlights painted on top of a light but warm brunette base.

To add depth, a slightly darker colour at the roots and under layers will do the trick.

REDHEAD

This season’s most popular reds are warm shades that flicker depth and dimension on an intense base and golden highlights.

But also shades of red – from burgundy and strawberry blonde to copper brown and auburn – will be among the most wanted shades this year.

Whatever style or colour you choose this year, consult your hairstylist for the best advice. Choose a style that complements your facial structure and colour that makes your highlights complement your eye colour and skin tone.
