Church Music
David Crowder (beard and glasses) and his band are travelling across North America on a musical journey to support their new album Church Music. The group’s only Canadian stop takes place in Abbotsford on Oct. 18.
Normally, when six friends get together for a night on the town in Las Vegas, all hell can break loose.
It was a little different on Thursday night.
The David Crowder Band was in “Sin City” on Thursday, the fourth stop in a 32 city tour promoting their new CD, Church Music.
It’s a tour that includes a stop in Abbotsford – the only Canadian city on the schedule – on Oct .18.
“So far it’s really been fun,” said Crowder, leader of the Christian group.
“We’ve been joking around with the audience and having a few laughs. Our comedy is exceeding our music.”
Church Music is the group’s fifth CD release and showcases the continual evolution of music within the church.
“It is definitely different from our previous releases. It feels like the next step. It has a much more urban beat and that was intentional,” says Crowder.
The move to an even more contemporary sound is a logical one. Crowder wants to present a message, but the message won’t be received if no one listens.
“It’s not just about church music, we have to be aware of what’s happening in the music world.
“You have to write in the language of the common people. It just makes sense. The music is popular – that’s why they call it pop music,” he explains.
However, the new album is up front about its message. The name itself tells listeners its objective.
Promoting his music/message is a full-time job for Crowder and his band. The group is usually on the road about 200 days a year. Despite that, they haven’t spent a great deal of time in Canada.
“We have to get north of the border a little more often.”
While the group has played in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton, it hasn’t hit the smaller venues.
“We should do a cross-Canada tour, that would be fun.”
Abbotsford is the one exception. The David Crowder Band will perform at the Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly (3145 Gladwin Rd.) on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
