The Abbotsford Grand Squares are calling people in for free modern square dancing lessons. The club is offering this on Sept. 14, 21 and 28. Everyone 12 years and up are welcome to drop in.
This is a new dancer class and they want people to come out and see if they like it.
“Fitness is in,” says Tanye Heath, a local member. She also thinks that it is a, “great way to keep your mind alert.”
In this new form of square dancing, people learn separate calls and dance forms.
It is “really bouncy music,” says Heath. Modern square dancing is called in English all over the world.
In October, these people will be asked if they would like to join at the cost of $21 per year for adults and $5 per year for teenagers.
They hold new dancer evenings on Mondays at 7 p.m., when they will have their “square angels” come out to help with the newcomers.
On Thursday evenings the “learning plus” dancers come out at 7 p.m. These are people who are slightly more advanced than the new dancers.
The club started up in 1981 and modern square dancing came around in the 1940s, after the Second World War.
Currently, the group has 75 members and their oldest dancer is 96 years old. They are “all one big family,” says Heath. The club also does demonstrations at seniors’ homes.
