Lantern Festival set to shine
Updated: August 21, 2009 2:35 PM
The third annual Spirit Lantern Festival is being held on Sept. 19 at Mill Lake. This is a free event and will include live entertainment.
The Fraser Valley Theatre Guild will present a sketch about Abbotsford pioneer families, plus there will be a lantern parade and fireworks. People will be able to enjoy a picnic dinner, while enjoying the colourful lanterns.
The evening will kick off with lantern and torch making in the gazebo at the park. Organizers hope to offer face painting, tattoos and stories as well.
The parade will start at 8 p.m. and will finish at the lake, where the fireworks will take place.
Throughout the summer, hundreds of individuals participated in lantern making activities, which was hosted by Abbotsford Spirit of BC (ASBC). People are encouraged to bring these lanterns to the festival as they portray cultural diversity.
“It’s a magical time for children and big children,” says ASBC President Christine Wiebe.
“September 19 will be a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy an old fashioned picnic and to light up the night.”
Workshop:
There will be a workshop for children on making lanterns, being held at Abbotsford Middle School on Sept. 16.
The workshop is free but parents should know it is necessary to pre-register their children to ensure a spot.
