You don’t have to call yourself a “folkie” to enjoy the Mission Folk Music Festival. The festival may have kicked off last night, but there is a lot of festival yet to discover.

Two afternoons and evenings full of music are still to come, so grab some sun screen and a comfy beach chair and head to Fraser River Heritage Park.

From noon to around 5:30 p.m. today and tomorrow, the festival features three shaded day time stages with continuous performances.

At any given time you might find various groupings of musicians playing together. You’ll hear them expound around a musical theme, or you might come upon a concert featuring an artist or group. There’s a lot of choice – 12 shows and three workshops and that’s just today.

If you’re a fan of the blues, you won’t want to miss High Noon Blues on the Art Market Stage on Saturday at, you guessed it, noon. Five of the finest blues and old-timey players gather for some great picking and singing.

Hear Colin Linden, Michael Jerome Browne, the Gallus Brothers and Ken Whiteley. At the same time on the Shady Grove Stage, folk legend Tom Paxton gets together with veteran singer-songwriters Connie Kaldor and Tim Williams for a performance called Live, Write, Sing.

Add a showcase of traditional Scottish music on the Rio Vista Stage, and you have a pretty good picture of just the first hour of the day.

Today also features the remarkable harmonic voices and sounds of Sardinia’s Tenores di Neoneli with the Mascia Duo at 2:30 p.m. on the Rio Vista Stage.

Tomorrow, 14 more day time concerts and collaborations are scheduled. Catch the North Atlantic Crossings session at 1:30 p.m. on the Shady Grove Stage. Faroe Islands singer Eivor and Celtic group The Outside Track, explore the similarities and differences of geography and music. The unpredictable and unique sounds of Switzerland’s Stimmhorn are on the Rio Vista Stage at 1 p.m. Hear alpenhorn, yodeling and vocals unlike anything you’ve ever heard! At 4 p.m. a tough choice between the high energy Quebecois and bluegrass gathering of The Breakmen, Headwater and Les Tireux d’Roches on the Art Market Stage, and the electrifying mestizo-reggae sounds of Rastrillos at the Shady Grove.

There’s all of the above still in store. And tomorrow night, a blockbuster roster that ends with the iconic voice of Tom Paxton. For the full schedule go to www.missionfolkmusicfestival.ca, or just head out to the Fraser River Heritage Park.
