Get ready to clap to the Celtic sound of 1066 during the July 22 Twilight Concert Series presentation.

1066 emerged from a jam session in Abbotsford in November of1985. The audience that night saw four musicians, who had never before played together, entertain for two hours in the lounge of an Eagles Club, providing entertainment until the dance band started up for the regular Friday night dance.

Their musical style was “not too seriously Celtic.” They were re-hired for the next several weeks and by January of 1986 had become the Friday night entertainment.

Since then the band has performed on television, stage, fairs, conventions and pubs on both sides of the border to appreciative audiences. Their irreverent, light-hearted style covers a broad range of the musical spectrum. They have shared the stage with such diverse luminaries as Irish Rover Will Millar, jazz piano phenom Michael Kaeshammer and banjo virtuoso Fast Eddie Erickson.

In 2002, they were deeply saddened at the death of friend and founding member Paul Abbott. The band released a CD on the first anniversary of his passing. Titled The Rumrunners, it is dedicated to his memory and features many of his favourite songs, including two that were written by Paul himself.

Leader, Phil Aldridge hails from Liverpool, England and is a long time resident of Mission.

The rest of the band are Abbotsford residents and have their roots in Scotland, England, Denmark and Canada. The band’s diverse musical background stems from Celtic folk, rock, classical, jazz, blues and musical theatre.

Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The concert stars at 7 p.m. For more information please call 604-826-0277.
