Abbotsford Police and Fire Rescue Service are advising kids and parents to have a fun but safe Halloween.

As the holiday falls on a weekend, more officers will be deployed to monitor the extra pedestrians, traffic and parties, said Const. Ian MacDonald.

Drivers need to take extra care Halloween night, and parents should accompany young children trick-or-treating and ensure their older kids travel in groups and stick to a planned route, he said.

Incidents involving fireworks are what keep police busiest on Halloween. The City of Abbotsford prohibits the sale, trade, possession or discharge of fireworks except with permit.

The fire department also has safety tips to ensure a spooky but fire-safe evening, said Lt. Ted Main. When choosing or making costumes, select flame-resistant materials and avoid trailing pieces that might easily ignite.

Parents should ensure their children know to stop, drop and roll should their clothes or costumes catch on fire.

It’s a good idea to put reflective tape on dark costumes and choose light-coloured clothing to make children visible to motorists.

Avoid decorating jack-o’-lanterns with candles; use flashlights instead, Main said.
