A few moms-to-be are needed by nursing students from University of the Fraser Valley.

Moms and their partners are needed to help educate nursing students while receiving extra support during their pregnancy and labour.

The program is open to women who will be having their baby in a Fraser Valley hospital between September and April.

Women having their babies at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial or Langley Memorial hospitals are eligible for the program.

Countless UFV nursing students over the past 13 years have had the opportunity to “shadow” a pregnant woman through doctor visits, prenatal classes, labour and delivery, and the postnatal period.

The students complete this component of the program before they study the theory of maternity nursing and before they take clinical training in maternity wards.

Moms – and their partners, if applicable – who agree to participate meet with the student nurse for a “get to know you” chat.

The student nurse then accompanies the mom on one visit to the doctor and one prenatal class; provides support during labour and delivery; and visits the family afterwards.

For more information, or to volunteer, call UFV’s Health Sciences Centre at 604-795-2817 or 604-504-7441, local 2817.
