Hundreds of deal-seeking consumers lined up at the new Best Buy on the weekend as the retail giant opened its newest location – in Abbotsford at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre.

The 25,000-sq.ft location, which hired more than 70 full- and part-time employees, held a three-day event to announce its new location.

“It went really well, it was really busy,” said Danielle Jang, communications manager of Best Buy Canada. While she did not have the final sales numbers for the weekend, she said opening events are usually well attended.

Opening a new big box store may seem to go against the current trend of economic caution, however, Jang says more opening are planned for the coming year.

According to Best Buy’s second quarter earnings report, released last month, the company had net earnings of $158 million for the three-month period ending Aug. 29.

There are now more than 60 Best Buy stores across Canada.

As part of the weekend opening, a donation of $5,000 was presented to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Abbotsford, Mission, Ridge Meadows.

“All of our openings contain a charitable aspect of some kind,” explained Jang.

Along with the giveaways, fans of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks were treated to an autograph session by forward Alex Burrows.
