Celebrating 30 years
Small Business Week has become a celebrated event for Canadian entrepreneurs. The story goes back to 1979 when Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) branches in the Lower Fraser Valley pooled their resources to organize small business management sessions during one week.
That week became Small Business Week.
BDC branches in B.C. repeated this successful experiment the following year, tripling the number of sessions presented to local businesses.
In 1981, Small Business Week was officially launched nationwide by BDC.
In 1988, the Young Entrepreneur Awards were created to highlight the success of young Canadian entrepreneurs and recognize their innovative spirit and business acumen.
As new awards and activities were gradually added, this initiative achieved even better results.
The year 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Small Business Week.
This year, BDC will celebrate entrepreneurs under the theme – Your dream, your business, your passion.
