A pair of Lower Mainland teenagers with a passion for popular music are getting set to hit the stage in Langley this week.
Here's the twist: the music these two love to perform was at the height of its popularity more than 40 years ago.
Rob Walker and Tanner Lohr, will perform a Tribute to the Beatles, Thursday night, Dec. 3 at Brookswood Secondary School.
"I think they were some of the best songwriters ever," said Walker, who was introduced to Beatles music through his dad.
"My father played a lot of Beatles music and the first CD I ever owned was a Beatles CD."
He was 11 years old at the time, and though he can't recall which album it was, he remembers being hooked immediately.
"It was happy music, the melodies and chord changes. I loved it. I'd never heard anything like it."
Now 17 and a Grade 12 student at Brookswood Secondary, Walker is still thrilled by the music that took the world by storm three decades before he was born.
And he's looking forward to sharing it with another audience this Thursday night.
"We'll pick some songs everybody loves and some we love to do," said Walker of the evening's planned set list.
It will include such classics She Loves You, Twist and Shout, Come Together, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Love Me Do, among other popular Beatles hits.
The pair will also perform some of Walker's original pieces during the acoustic show which begins at 7 p.m. in the theatre at Brookswood Secondary School.
Walker and Lohr met after successfully auditioning for a Beatles tribute band called Imagine. After splitting off from that group, the two, together with another young musician named Brock Miller, performed as The Fab Before, another Beatles tribute act.
"When we were together as a band, we tried to stay as true to the music as possible," said Walker.
Now, as a duo, the teens play "more from our hearts," he added.
But true to the spirit of the four lads from Liverpool, they still dress in costume and stay in character, speaking in English accents on stage.
Whenever they perform, Walker plays the role of John Lennon and Lohr, a Grade 11 student at Earl Marriot Secondary in White Rock, takes on the part of guitarist George Harrison.
"He's a great guitar player," said Walker of his musical partner. "He's the happiest guy when he's up on stage."
Proceeds from ticket sales will help Walker, who is also an actor, to fund a trip to Los Angeles, where he plans to attend performance workshops.
Tickets are $10 each. They will be available at the door, or in advance, by calling 778-240-2400. Brookswood Secondary is located at 20902 37A Ave.
