Noel for the needy

Cowichanians can set boots and umbrellas aside and soak up some Noel music at Brentwood College School during Friday’s Concert For A Winter’s Eve.

Music directors Phil Newns, Scott McGill, Elizabeth MacIsaac lead student soloists, choirs and instrumentalists through the college’s musical gift to the community while gathering groceries for the south end’s food bank.

Traci Waite of the CMS Food Bank serving Cobble Hill, Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake cheered the college for helping growing needs at her busy facility.

“We’ve been really blessed but this year our numbers are way up.

“I’ve never seen it this bad and we’re seeing people who’ve never been to a food bank before.”

Brentwood hopes to help musically.

The Winter’s Eve band boasts pianists Thomas Kinzel and Newns, guitarists McGill, acoustic bassists James Young and Katie Cullen, and drummer Conor Elmes.

Newns is stoked about showcasing Grade 9 to 12 pupils’ prowess for parents and pals alike.

“Everyone’s welcome and lots of parents come if they can make it.

“For our students, it’s great for them to rise to the occasion and do the best they can.”

Winter’s Eve tunes span classical music (Vicky Chiu playing Rachmaninoff’s Prelude), pops (Hope King and Daniel Hilhorst singing Baby, It’s Cold Outside), and jazz (Shannon White sings Billie Holiday’s God Bless The Child) to southern rock (the band plays the Doobie Brothers’ Long Train Runnin’.)

Religious significance of Christmas will also be honoured as Kevin Kim, Michael Oh and Jenny Cha play Laudamus Te from Vivaldi’s Gloria.

“And it’s all for a good cause: the food bank,” Newns said.

Waite said 180 kids have registered so far for Christmas gift/food hampers.

The deadline is early December.
