England, Scotland, Austria, Italy, a little bit of wine and a lot of music.

Headwater is about to embark on their first European tour and the band’s North Shore founders can’t wait.

“I think a lot of the (European) audience are attracted to Western music because its new to them,” guitarist and singer Jonas Shandel said.

The four-member folk band released its latest record Lay You Down in Europe last May and it got a lot of attention. After 40 reviews and numerous hours making contacts, Headwater leaves Nov. 2 on a month-long tour.

It’s going to be a lot of work, but Shandel and his North Shore bandmate Matt Bryant are used to it.

Since they both graduated from Argyle secondary school in 2001, they’ve logged thousands of kilometres criss-crossing Western Canada for gigs. Performances at corporate functions have also helped pay the bills, but this past summer the now quartet was busy on the festival circuit.

“We work really hard,” Shandel said.

For the past three years the two 26-year-olds full-time career has been solely the band. The band has earned a reputation as one of the finest acoustic roots groups in town.

And there’s nothing they’d rather be doing. Having known each other for 15 years, all the while writing songs together, playing music side by side is natural.

“I would say we are a little like brothers,” Shandel said.

And by the time the European tour is over, they’ll be even closer.
