Movie Under the Stars

The Knick Knack Nook, a new Bowen Island store set to open up this fall, is going to be about sustainability and giving to Bowen. And thanks to the Bowen Island First Credit Union, the fledgling store will itself be helped by the efforts of the 2nd annual outdoor, free Movie Under the Stars night.

So what exactly then is the Knick Knack Nook?

“The Knick Knack Nook is a re-use-it store,” Nook committee member Teal Ander said during a telephone interview. “What that means is that it provides a community service to prevent – and I’m reading off our literature now – to prevent good, used items from being taken off island to landfill.”

All items will be donated and consist of clothing, toys, games, music instruments, crafts and other smaller items (everything to be in good condition and clean).

Any profits will go to as yet undetermined community projects, and Ander points out that the Nook should have “almost no operating costs” so they expect there will be profits to distribute.

The store will also benefit from the concession sales from Friday’s film night at the Bowfest field in Crippen Park. The movie will be an animation and although the title hasn’t been officially released, The Undercurrent has learned it is likely to be the film WALL-E. Movies selected are orientated toward kids but the sponsoring Credit Union’s Abigail Fisk says last year’s movie, Horton Hears a Who, seemed to work for big people, too.

“It was very well received,” Fisk said. “Especially by the adults.”

They hired an outdoor movie crew and the movie will play on a giant 30-foot inflatable screen.

Start time is dusk (about 8:30 p.m.) and there will be a concession opening at 6 p.m. selling night sticks, candy, popcorn and drinks.

Fisk estimated 600 people attended last year.

Ander says the Nook building, recently erected near Bowen Island Recycling Depot (B.I.R.D), is close to being finished. A press release from the group says the municipality, Wolfgang Duntz and John Reid have been behind the project and that they have benefitted from the skills of many islanders, including Daron Jennings, Jeff Dempsey, Gary Ander and John Willis.

Teal Ander notes the idea for the store grew out of the work that Bonnie and Stan Bolton did with their Tacky Shop, for years a mainstay on Bowen. She says Morganne Keplar and others got together a group of people for a meeting at Cates Hill Chapel last March 5 to talk about the need of such a store. Keplar pointed out on the One Day Bowen site that creating a re-use-it store was discussed at length at the meeting, with the Knick Knack Nook name coming from the kids and collection of adults there.

The Nook is scheduled to open sometime in the early fall and the hours of operation will be Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The store will be staffed entirely by volunteers. For info about Friday night’s film, call Bowen’s First Credit Union’s branch at 604-947-2022.

The Credit Union says there should be ample room for blankets and lawn chairs.

The Undercurrent is a proud media sponsor of Movie Under the Stars.
