Music of Bach, Brahms ends summer music series

Violinist Müge Büyükçelen-Badel and pianist Kelly Charlton will bring Christ Church Cathedral’s annual Summer Recital Series to an end Saturday (Aug. 23).

The pair will perform some of the most beloved music for violin and piano composed by J.S. Bach, Eugène Ysaÿe and Johannes Brahms.

Büyükçelen-Badel has been a featured soloist with many orchestras in Europe, North and Central America and the Middle East.

Since moving to Canada from her native Turkey, Büyükçelen-Badel has become well-known to Victoria audiences for her stylish, virtuosic performances. She’s a member of the Victoria Symphony, the Emily Carr String Quartet and the Galiano and Aventa Ensembles.

Charlton is assistant to the director of music at Christ Church Cathedral and coordinates the Summer Recital Series. He studied at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London, England.

Since his return to Canada in 2006, he has continued to work extensively as solo recitalist, collaborative pianist, chamber musician and vocal coach.

Admission is by donation and supports the cathedral’s ongoing music ministry. The concert begins at 4 p.m.
