The difference a year makes

The most popular song of the Broadway musical Rent is Seasons of Love, in which the poignant question is posed: how do you measure a year?
I have spent the last 525,600 minutes growing into a new self.
A year ago, it meant a different thing to me than it does today. This new experience has grown, expanded and literally taken on a life of its own.
So how do you measure a year?
For me, perhaps the past year can be best measured in nylons, road trips, Starbucks, crazy dance moves, public meetings — but, most importantly, laughter and love.
Travelling to 14 communities and attending more than 50 city events has been an opportunity for which I am grateful.
None of this would have been possible without the help and support of our city.
To Mayor Terry Lake and other city representatives, thank you. It has been a pleasure representing Kamloops.
To my princesses, Megan MacGillivary and Korah Dewalt, I have discovered two life-long friends.
You have helped me in countless ways and have kept me in good spirits this whole year through.
Words cannot begin to express how many good times we have had, and I could not have chosen a better team to work with.
My sincere thanks to the ambassador program organizers and volunteers for creating such a magical year for all the young women who participated.
It has been a learning experience for me as I have observed how so few people fulfill such large tasks.
Mother Teresa: You have to be the most humble and hardworking volunteer I have ever crossed paths with. You have been a fine president and have become a close friend.
To the instructors, trainers and judges, thank you for making this experience so enjoyable.
To Anthony and Serena at Viva Bridal, thank you for your contribution to our fashion show and for providing my gown pageant night.
Also, thanks to the sponsors that make it all possible, especially to my own, Berwick on the Park.
To my friends and relatives both here and absent, quite simply, I couldn’t have done it without the support you’ve provided me over the past year.
Rosilyn, my lovely older sister, you are amazing. I look up to you in every way, even though I don’t always like to admit it.
And naturally, there are two people who have made all the difference in the world — who have defined love, loyalty and true happiness for me.
They have put up with me and always supported me. I can’t begin to explain how extraordinary they are.
To mom and dad, all I have to say is get used to having me around the house again.
