April Verch freely admits she’s an over-achiever.

“Oh, yes, I’m definitely a Type A personality,” the fiddler/step dancer says after she’s asked about her touring schedule this year that include more than 80 dates in Canada, the U.S., Germany, England, Belgium, Ireland and Sweden.

Verch gets an even bigger gasp when she states, “We’re planning to add a few more as well.

But touring is what she loves most about the music business as it not only gives her a stage to play and dance — as well as promote her latest CD, Bright Like Gold — but it also allows her to see the world, including a stop in Coquitlam next Thursday.

She gets rave reviews no matter where she performs, with audience-goers and reviewers lauding her for her polished style, her rich sound, her great bowing arm, her unstoppable smile and her unbelievable energy.

Recently, the Berklee-trained musician released her first instructional video (which will be available on tour) to demonstrate Ottawa Valley step dancing.
And, on her upcoming dates, she and her band that includes Hayes Griffin (guitarist) and Cody Walters (bassist and banjo player) will also be testing out some new material for a CD to be recorded this fall.
With so many things on the go, Verch says there isn’t much time to be flexible; however, she does like to spice up her concerts “just to keep us fresh."
Verch was in B.C. last year and performed in the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. She holds a soft spot for this province as her shows offer glimpse of the artistic scene happening on the other side of the country.
“People aren’t used to seeing Ottawa Valley step dancing and fiddling so much in B.C. so it’s all very new to them when we come out,” she said, “and I love their reactions."
• Tickets for the April Verch Band on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. are $30/$25/$15 through the Evergreen Cultural Centre box office at 604-927-6555 or evergreenculturalcentre.ca. The show starts at 8 p.m.
