Wild wings envelopes the marsh
The trumpeter swans are returning to Somenos Marsh, and with them comes one of the valley's bigger eco-fundraisers.
Starting tomorrow, the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society kicks off WildWings Festival 2013 to raise money and awareness for the conservation of one of the magnificent birds' important wintering habitats.
This year's festival runs from until Nov. 24 and includes a festival kickoff and beer release party at the Craig St. Brew Pub, nature tours of the marsh, and a month-long art exhibition at Just Jake's Restaurant.
The full events schedule is as follows:
Thursday Oct. 17
WHAT: Festival Kickoff and WildWings Ale Release
WHERE: Craig St. Brew Pub, 25 Craig St, Duncan BC, V9L 1V7
WHEN: 5p.m. until close
DETAILS: Come and enjoy a night of live music, delicious beer and wildlife conservation. There will be a Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society display with artwork and marsh info, t-shirt sales and more. Proceeds from WildWings Ale will go towards Somenos Marsh conservation.
Saturday Oct. 19
WHAT: Arms Around the Marsh
WHERE: Starting from the corner of Beverly St. and the Trans-Canada Highway, spreading around the edges of the marsh
DETAILS: Join hands with your friends and neighbours to show your support for the beautiful Somenos Marsh. Don't miss out on this special opportunity to be a part of something bigger. Together we will create a human chain around the marsh showing our community just how many of us care about protecting this important place. Please walk or bike to this event if possible.
Sunday Oct. 20
WHAT: Map our Marshes Workshop (Hosted by the Cowichan Land Trust and the B.C. Wildlife Wetlands Education Program)
WHERE: Thrifty Foods Community Room, 2755 Beverly St, Duncan BC, V9L 6X2
DETAILS: Join the BC Wildlife Federation for a daylong, free workshop to learn GPS techniques that will help you identify conservation needs in your community and protect your important wetlands. Pre-registration is required and can be completed at: www.mapourmarshesduncan.eventbrite.com

WHAT: Somenos Garry Oak Protected Area Tour
WHERE: Meet at the end of York Rd. in the Timbercrest subdivision
WHEN: 10 to 11 a.m.
DETAILS: Join the Cowichan Valley Docents on an educational nature tour around the Somenos Garry Oak Protected Area, an ecologically and culturally significant area that borders the Somenos Marsh.
Saturday Oct. 26:
WHAT: Birding on the Boardwalk
WHERE: Meet at the entrance to the Somenos Marsh boardwalk, on the Trans-Canada Highway just north of Duncan, before the BC Forest Museum
WHEN: 10 a.m.
DETAILS: Join longtime birder and Somenos Marsh enthusiast Derrick Marven on a nature tour along the boardwalk focusing on local and migratory bird species. This event is weather dependent and may be cancelled due to heavy rain.
Sunday Oct. 27:
WHAT: WildWings Art Exhibition and Auction
WHERE: Just Jake's Restaurant, 45 Craig St, Duncan BC, V9L 1V7
WHEN: 2 to 5 p.m.
DETAILS: Come view and bid on locally created wildlife-inspired art. There will be nibbles and a cash bar to enjoy. Partial proceeds will go the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society. The exhibition will be on display until November 24.
