30 Under 30: Bre Teranishi
Age: 29
High school: Steveston
Makeup intrigued Bre Teranishi at an early age. Art and graphic design did too. So studying at Emily Carr University of Art and Design was a natural fit. There she earned a bachelor’s degree before studying design in Chicago.
But life began tugging her down a slightly different road, and Teranishi’s canvas became people. With further training at Vancouver Film School, she began a career as a makeup artist and hair stylist, immediately finding work on film sets, photo shoots, weddings and fashion shows. Since then countless models, actors and others wanting to look their best have benefited from Teranishi’s artistry and easy-going nature.
Born and raised in Richmond, Teranishi has been expanding her client base outside of Vancouver. In the future, she sees herself aligned with a makeup brand, working behind the scenes on bigger projects. For now she’s enjoying the many different personalities and long hours that come with the job as a freelance artist.
Inspiration? “In makeup I usually look to industry legends such as Val Garland or Lucia Pieroni. To me they are masters of storytelling with their craft. Outside the world of beauty my inspiration is more homegrown. My family and friends are amazing and keep my internal compass pointing true.”
Most proud of? “Making the decision to leave my day job and pursue my goals as a freelance artist.”
Advice? “The best advice I ever heard was not to listen to anyone else’s advice. Listen to yourself, have faith, and put in the work to make things happen.
