Pushing the boundaries of ceramics
“Gorgeous hybrids”, “bold, brash, and whimsical”, and “compelling mutations” are just a few of the words used to describe B.C.-based artist Brendan Tang’s wildly incongruous ceramic vessels that fuse Asian and Western historical decorative styles with pop art forms derived from Japanese anime and manga.
On Thursday (Feb. 7) at 7:30 p.m., discover how Tang pushes the boundaries of contemporary Canadian ceramic art in his illustrated talk presented by the Surrey Art Gallery Association.
Raised in Canada, Tang was born in Ireland to Trinidadian parents who are of Chinese and East Indian descent. Working in the unassuming, yet utterly transformable material of clay, he creates a personal narrative with the hybridization of cultures mirroring his identity as an “ethnically-mixed Asian Canadian.” Tang’s work is in Surrey Art Gallery’s new exhibition The future is already here: Alex McLeod and Brendan Tang. Following significant educational and professional accomplishments, in 2012 this young artist won the RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award in ceramic art at the Gardiner Museum.
There will be time for questions and conversation during and following the talk. The event concludes by 9 p.m. Refreshments are provided. This event is presented by the Surrey Art Gallery Association in partnership with the Surrey Art Gallery, and with support from the Arts Council of Surrey.
