Chemainus High students mount annual recital showing Why We Dance
Answers about Why We Dance leap from Chemainus secondary's upcoming annual performance.
While her Grade 9 to 12 students express their talents in a raft of routines Jan. 24, teacher Sarah Lane simply wants young dancers to learn, have fun and carry performance joy throughout their lives.
"My biggest goal for Chemainus secondary is to instill the passion for performing live theatre — dance in particular — to my students, and have them translate that into when they perform, and enjoy doing pieces and learning everyday," the former Carlson's School of Dance pupil said.
"I'm proud to be able to pass on my life's lessons from the best teachers I've ever had.
"Hopefully in their lives, my students can be involved with theatre and realize how important arts and culture is to a vibrant community."
Forty-five Mural Town students — about 1/6 of the school's student population — will flash their footwork in various dance styles during the one-night stand of 20 routines in Chemainus High's multi-purpose hall.
"Its a combination of dances I've choreographed for my classes, plus solos, duos and groups numbers my students have choreographed," said Lane.
"There's a huge variety of styles, from jazz to traditional to contemporary and ballet, modern, hip-hop — lots for everybody of all abilities," said Lane, who loved dancing so much as a kid, her parents built her a home studio.
Lane realizes some of her pupils don't have that kind of training.
It doesn't matter.
To Lane, it's all about motivation and movement.
"Kids without as much experience get to dance with those who do, and play a leadership role."
Results speak for themselves.
"Last year it was an over-sold show."
