Sing your way into the new year

SongsOnSpotSurrey.jpg

Create instant songs, spontaneous solos, three-part harmony, and backup vocals. Sound impossible? You’ll be doing it all before you know it.

Songs on the Spot instructor Alan Marriott creates an encouraging atmosphere where everyone, regardless of singing ability, feels at ease. Under his guidance, participants improvise words while the accompanist improvises the melodies. In this fun and inspirational class for adults, all that is needed is an interest in music and a sense of humour. Singing experience is not required.

Songs on the Spot, offered at the Surrey Arts Centre, will run for six weeks beginning Jan. 28 at a cost of $100. A free, introductory session is being offered on Jan. 21 from 7-9:15 p.m. Although the introductory session is free, participants must register by Jan. 14 to book their spot. Register online at www.surrey.ca/register or by phone at 604-501-5100.

Songs on the Spot participant Lois describes the classes as “fun, educational and inspirational, as well as an environment where one feels safe to experiment creatively, intuitively, and spontaneously.” She praises Marriott for his supportive teaching style.

“Alan is a gifted and dedicated teacher, performer and coach whose focus is to inspire his students to risk more and have a lot of fun doing it!”

Marriott is an accomplished stage and voiceover performer with a specialty in improv. In his own words, he has been “freeing minds for over twenty years both in Canada and Europe.” He launched his improv career at Vancouver TheatreSports® League, performing alongside Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles and others. During a 20-year span of living and working in England, Alan completed his formal training at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, founded London Theatresports, and taught improv to a who’s who of British comedy, including Eddie Izzard, Alan Davies, John Sparks, Jake Arnott, Stella Duffy and many more. Most recently, he has made his mark in B.C. as the creator of Vancouver TheatreSports® League’s hit show The ImprovMusical.

Surrey Arts Centre is located at 13750 88 Ave. Phone 604-501-5566 for further information.
