EDITORIAL: Someone, somewhere knows something

It was two years ago this morning that the bloodied and battered body of Henry Vandenberghe was found in the snow, not far from his Thrupp Street home.

He died the next day.

Vandenberghe’s murder was the third of three in rapid succession that fall — two of which remain unsolved.

The other two victims — the shooting death of Gary Cavanagh (arrests have been made) and the stabbing death of Brian Scott (still unsolved) — are not believed to have been random killings.

Police believe Vandenberghe’s death was indeed a random act of violence, which is why his murder remains so troubling to so many people.

Do police have a suspect?

They will not say, though rumours persist there may be a person of interest, pending more proof.

Did Vandenberghe get attacked by happenstance?

Yes, say police. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But, other than confirming Vandenberghe died from severe head trauma, Mounties are saying precious little.

Perhaps there is precious little to tell; perhaps they are simply keeping quiet to ensure the bad guy doesn’t get away.

In any event, this tragic anniversary of Vandenberghe’s death — and that of Scott — should compel all who may have seen or heard something on the days these two were attacked and killed to think hard about last year.

Think about what you may have heard or saw.

Think about every little detail, even — perhaps especially — that minutiae you have dismissed too quickly as being irrelevant.

And call police if you think you have information.
