Unacceptable budget leaves the opposition no choice
December 02, 2008Dear editor
We do not want another election!
The Harper government in failing to address the present global financial crisis has left the opposition parties no alternative but to vote against its budget. No one wants another election but it would be morally and ethically wrong for a party to support a budget that it believes wrong. The only choice left is to form a coalition government.
I have heard that the opposition parties are just whining that the Harper government has eliminated the voter subsidy to parties. That is a minor one compared to the other concerns, but, in defense of this subsidy I would like to point out that a democracy can only happen when all citizens can have a voice in government not just the wealthy. The subsidy is one way of ensuring this.
There is a financial crisis. We cannot pretend it isn't there and hope it will go away. If the opposition parties are blackmailed into supporting the government and we end up in financial ruin, who will be blamed? The Harper government? No. It will be the other parties for supporting them.
