Cowichan has a lot to be thankful for
October 15, 2008Not sure if many of you spent much time this Thanksgiving pondering all we should be thankful for.
At the risk of sounding pompous, there is quite a bit. Just a quick look through the weekend paper will yield a lengthy laundry list.
Let’s start with the thing that has been dominating headlines lately: the federal election.
Whether you are celebrating or cursing the results this morning, you can’t dispute our democratic system is so far above what is available to so many others on this planet.
Whatever our flaws, our votes actually make a difference and our politicians actually can be made accountable.
Next consider all locals who have put their names forward to serve in the next civic election. You can debate their quality all you want. Just don’t take for granted their willingness to put themselves forward to do what is mostly a thankless job.
Take a flip through all the stories based around acts of charity and people trying to make a difference in our community and beyond: book sales, bottle drives, youth charity efforts and thingamaboobs, all aimed at improving our quality of life.
Consider in just those 64 pages all the leisure opportunities we have available in arts and entertainment, in parks and recreation, in fun. From a third-world perspective, wouldn’t it blow people’s minds?
Finally, look at the food. In a world where 90 per cent of the people live at or below the poverty line, most of us are feasting in the comforts of our homes on fabulous meals and debating whether our food can be considered world-class.
We can never take that for granted.
