Money well spent
November 25, 2008They say you have to spend money to make money.
It’s undoubtedly true, although the trick is to spend what you can afford to get the biggest bang for your buck.
Whether B.C. will recoup the enormous amount it will end up spending on the 2010 Olympics remains to be seen. For the same reason, taxpaying cynics generally oppose politicians going on expensive junkets.
However, the Winter Games are coming to B.C., so communities outside the Lower Mainland should do what they can to get in on economic spinoffs.
There’s no doubt that a Comox Valley delegation to Italy for the 2006 Winter Olympics has begun to pay off.
One International Paralympic Committee World Cup event has happened here and another is coming this winter. Olympic officials from many countries now know of the Comox Valley and some have decided to do pre-Olympic training at Mount Washington.
This stems from a meeting in the small Italian town of Cuneo in February 2006, the Comox Valley Spirit of BC community committee noted last week.
Our contingent met local officials in Cuneo, a smaller community than the Comox Valley that had attracted and hosted the Olympic Torch to connect itself to the Games.
Much hard work by a small but committed group of people who believe strongly in the Comox Valley resulted Friday in the announcement the Olympic Flame would not just pass through our towns but would pause for a celebration.
Besides being a moment of community, provincial and national pride, it will be yet another occasion to publicize and promote the Valley to a wider audience. Judging from its results so far, we can expect the Comox Valley Spirit of BC community committee to make the most of the opportunity. editor@comoxvalleyrecord.com
