Regional District of North Okanagan rounding up hazardous waste

Get your household hazardous waste ready to be rounded up.

The 2014 Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) Household Hazardous Waste Round Up will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Regional District of North Okanagan office parking lot in Coldstream (9848 Aberdeen Road), and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Enderby Fire Hall (1407 George Street) and the Lumby Fire Hall (1769 Shuswap Avenue).

Bring your household hazardous waste for safe disposal or recycling: old pesticides, solvents, chemicals, or corrosive and toxic cleaners; almost anything with a flammable or poisonous label.

This service is provided free of charge to RDNO residents.

The Round Up is for household hazardous waste only. Containers up to 20 litres in size will be accepted. Waste from commercial or industrial sources will not be accepted, nor will electronic waste.

Residents should take the following precautions when loading and transporting hazardous materials:

1. Keep the material away from children, pets or food products;

2. Tightly secure container lids to prevent leaks;

3. Leave the material in the original container and leave the labels intact which will ensure proper handling if contents are known; and

4. Pack items in a sturdy box and place upright to prevent spills; line your trunk or truck box with plastic just in case.

For residents unable to attend the Sept. 13 Round Up, there are a number of year round drop-off locations for certain types of hazardous waste.

Chasers Bottle Depot in Vernon accepts some pesticides, solvents and flammable liquids from residents at no charge. Chasers Bottle Depot also accepts unwanted paint, as does Interior Freight and Bottle Depot in Vernon, Armstrong Collision Services in Armstrong, and KBM Autoworks and Towing in Lumby.

These events would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers from the Enderby and Vernon Lion Clubs, and fire fighters from the Enderby and Lumby Fire Departments.

For more information about the event or other hazardous waste disposal options, please contact the RDNO at 250-550-3700 or e-mail recycle@rdno.ca.
