Wayne Makinson's received the Best Overall Effort award for his garden from the Mission Communities in Bloom (C in B) Society last week during its annual awards night at the Mission Leisure Centre. Makinson also received the top award in the residential back yard category.

A total of 16 awards were handed out that night, including ones to this year's unsung heroes Denyse Taverner and Bill Elliot.

Taverner is a prime model of what C in B Society is all about, said Mission C in B president Heather Stewart. "(She is) among the first to respond to a call for volunteers, unafraid of the heavy work, a generous donor, and a loyal advocate of several local groups."

Stewart described Elliot as a builder, educator, gardener, and a passionate history student with an eye for details.

"Although semi-retired from teaching, this man has developed strong links with our public schools by identifying teachers that are developing new environmental and garden projects," said Stewart.

Other award recipients are:

Jennifer Scutt - Residential Front Yard

Doug and Diana Youngson - Residential Total Yard

Mike Cuthbertson - Residential Total Yard

Elisa Williams - Vegetable Garden

Frances and Ed Storozynski - Environmental Project

Museum Edwardian Garden (Gorilla Gardeners) - Heritage Project

Soapbox Garden L.I.N.C. - Non-Profit/Service Club

Edwards Estates - Strata/Retirement Facilities

Otter Cooperative Gas Bar - Industrial

Ferndale Farm - Small Business-Commercial
