Queen's candidates still sought

There’s still time to be a part of a royal Vernon Winter Carnival tradition.

The Queen Silver Star program has extended the deadline for 16 to 18 year olds interested in not only vying for a prestigious title, but taking part in a top class personal development program.

“We are continuing to accept late applications for our long list of sponsors until Tuesday for this year’s program,” said Calvin Hoy, Vernon Winter Carnival director.

The program may have started out as a beauty pageant with its first candidates in 1960, but has since grown into an opportunity for young ladies to excel.

Some of the classes the candidates will receive this year include etiquette, stress management, basic automotive, speechcraft (toastmasters), modeling, food and nutrition, Vernon history, skin and hair care, interview skills and self defence, communication skills, financial planning and time management. Candidates attend classes on an average of two to three times a week from September to early February.

“The annual program concludes with the judges selection of two ambassadors who will represent our area to the rest of the province for the next year,” said Hoy.

Meanwhile, the Vernon Winter Carnival Society is saying goodbye to Queen Silver Star Program long standing committee members Coleen Noel, Karen Humphreys and Doreen Hossie who have retired from the excellence program after many years of hard work.

“They have volunteered thousands of hours to help bring this program to be the premier ambassadorial program in the province,” said Hoy.

“The Vernon Winter Carnival Society would like to thank them for their years of volunteer services and personal sacrifices and we very much appreciate them.

“We are formatting a new committee of over 15 enthusiastic ladies to carry on the traditions to continue to improve and modernize this very valuable youth personal development program.”
