Donate by buying Canada Day poster in Parksville

One of the biggest July 1 celebrations on Vancouver Island takes place in Parksville and this year’s Canada Day party will once again see hundreds of people flock to our community to show their national pride.

The day of fun starts with a pancake breakfast in the Coastal Community Credit Union parking lot from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

At 10 a.m. a big parade will make its way down the Island Highway from Shelly Road to Craig Street finishing at the Parksville Community Centre.

After the parade Parksville Community Park will be bustling with activities all day long organized by the Rotary Club of Parksville PM.

Rotarians have been the back bone of the Canada Day festivities for many years now and the club’s president is hoping for some generous community support to keep event alive.

Raven Pruden said last year’s budget was close to $40,000 and the event didn’t generate any extra revenue for other projects they fund throughout the year.

Pruden said many local businesses have stepped up and are sponsoring the various activities planned for the day but organizers are still about $7,000 shy of what they need for the big birthday party.

“Without local business sponsors the celebrations in Parksville could not continue,” admitted Pruden.

He said because funds can be hard to come by volunteers will be asking for donations at the event from individuals to make up the difference.

“We are short of what we need in funding and we are hoping that if everyone donates a dollar we will be in good shape.  That is all we are asking for because we can’t rely on the business community to foot the bill every year,” he explained.

New this year will be a wrist band for a suggested $5 donation that will give kids access to a Bounce-a-Rama fun zone.

Pruden said even with the wrist band fee it is still an affordable day for families.

Another way to help contribute to the community event is to purchase a Canada Day poster by donation.

The official event posters will be signed by members of some of the bands that are performing on the main stage.

To make sure you get a rock-n-roll keepsake, pre-order and pay for your poster on line and pick it up at event during the headliner performance.
