VIU program to create Aboriginal Gathering Place

NANAIMO — A new Vancouver Island University program will have the side benefit of creating the Aboriginal Gathering Place.

The Gathering Place will be the centre for aboriginal campus celebrations and students support services

Students in the aboriginal construction program will build the centre. The program begins in 2009 and combines First Nations cultural components with industry training authority level one carpentry, which is the first step to becoming a journeyman carpenter.

The program is designed to give students credit towards their apprenticeship and teach them traditional building techniques.

The ten month program, which only has 18 spaces, is open to aboriginal students from around the region first.

For more information contact First Nations student services at 250-740-6510 or Dan Lines at 250-740-6146.
