Douglas College is providing a secured place to park for students and employees who commute by bicycle.

The school has installed a metal cage with room for about 50 bicycles in its underground parking area at the New Westminster campus. Students and employees can sign up to use the rooms, which contain bicycle racks and gear lockers, for free. Registered users get an access code to get into the cage but use their own lock to secure their bikes.

The facility has wall-mounted racks and adjustable two-level rack units. Repair stations and air pumps for basic bicycle maintenance will also be available.

“Bicycle commuting is challenging enough without having to worry about whether you can park your bike in a safe place. We hope these new facilities remove barriers for students and employees who want to ride to Douglas College,” said Blaine Jensen, vice-president of educational services.

Students and employees can register at the New Westminster campus bookstore. The parking areas will be open for use Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Overnight storage is not permitted.
