Stelly’s climbs to the top
Stelly’s Secondary was abuzz last Friday as the school played host to a climbing competition with the Island’s only other climbing academy.
Participants from the Cowichan Secondary Climbing Academy attended The Boulders Climbing Gym at Stelly’s last Friday, April 11 for a friendly scrambled format competition featuring bouldering and top rope events.
Cowichan Secondary has had their academy established for a year and Stelly’s was happy to host the friendly competition between the two schools.
“We have a lot of students who are just starting out in climbing and they don’t get to compete like some of the more advanced climbers do so this gave them a chance to not only compete but also to meet and talk with other competitors,” explained Ryan Braun, a teacher from Stelly’s.
“The competition is friendly and it’s all about people working together to create a community.”
Stelly’s dominated the competition, finishing top three in all categories but two.
In Women’s Recreation Hallie Nystedt took first, Cianna Wolski second and Tessa Farrell third (all from Stelly’s). In Men’s Recreation Will Podmoroff took first, Brandon Latouf second and Gil White third (all from Stelly’s).
In Women’s Experience Marina Steele took first, Shannon Ogden second and Karoline Boller third (all fromStelly’s). In Men’s Experience Kjarten Einarsson took first place, Reid Brady second and McGregor Abbott (all from Stelly’s).
In Women’s Open Stelly’s girls Evelyna Trottier and Niina Chatham took first and second, and Aedyn McKintrick from Cowichan took third. In Men’s Open Stelly’s climber Tristen Gosselin took first and was followed by Cowichan’s Aidan Doyle and Ethan Fagan in second and third.
