Clinics offer oral cancer screening

Two local dental clinics will be offering free oral cancer screening exams on Wednesday April 16 and Thursday April 17.

More than 500 British Columbians are diagnosed annually with oral cancer, but there are low rates of early detection, meaning four in 10 people will die within five years of being diagnosed.

Coppersmith Dental and Affinity Dental will be doing their part to reduce those tragic numbers.

With advances in technology, dental professionals can detect an estimated 84 per cent of oral cancers, and can spot a wide variety of oral malignancies before they develop into cancer.

Locals are urged to make their appointments early, as schedules fill up quickly.

The clinics will waive the usual fee of $34 as part of their community initiatives program, inviting patients to make a donation instead, with donations matched by participating clinics.

Coppersmith Dental is located at 11380 Steveston Hwy. For an appointment, call 604-274-5262.

Affinity Dental Clinic is located at 1625-6551 No. 3 Rd. and can be reached at 604-821-1111.
