A list of upcoming and ongoing library events at the Chilliwack, Sardis and Yarrow libraries.
Going Gluten Free: Are you interested in gluten-free food? Join Fiona Ehrenholz, a natural health advisor for Pure Integrative Pharmacy, as she discusses whether gluten-free living is a passing fad or a medical condition. Takes place Tuesday, April 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Ongoing and Current Programs:
Family Games Night: Bring the kids, grandma and grandpa and head to the Sardis library for a night of board games. Takes place on the last Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
LEGO Club: We have the LEGO, you bring your imagination! LEGO club takes place at the Sardis Library on the third Tuesday of the month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. It's a fun time for kids ages 7 to 14, so come on in and join them after school. (Psst - girls are welcome!) Please note that registration is required by calling 604-858-5503.
Spring Book Bingo: Take part in the spring Book Bingo contest at the Chilliwack Library, which runs from Feb. 1 to April 30. Pick up your bingo sheet from the Chilliwack Library and put an X through each completed library activity. For each completed row (up, down or diagonal), show your bingo card at the information desk for a chance to win one of several great prizes! Prize draws will be held on May 1.
Storytime: Introduce kids to the love of books and language with Storytime! Children and caregivers will enjoy interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and more. Storytime prepares children to learn to read. Takes place at the Chilliwack Library every Tuesday (Feb. 4 to April 29) from 10:30 to 11 a.m., at the Yarrow Library (March 4 and 25, April 1, 15, and 29, and May 6) from 10:30 to 11 a.m., and at the Sardis Library on Mondays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. (excluding March 17 and April 21).
Knit and Knatter: Pack up your yarn and head to the library! Knitting is fun, relaxing and a great way to connect across the generations. Join knitters of all ages and abilities at the Sardis Library on Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. for their warm and welcoming drop-in knitting group. Children and beginners are welcome.
Mental Silence Meditation: Mental silence is the experience of inner silence which brings a peaceful and clearer awareness. It is easy to learn, and with the guidance of Sergiy Fadyeyev, can generate significant results quickly. Mental silence can reduce stress and have a profound balancing effect on physical, mental and emotional dimensions of the students, enhancing both resilience and total well being. This program takes place at the Sardis Library on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. (excluding April 21).
eHelp Desk: Visit Chilliwack Library’s Monday afternoon eHelp Desk for one-on-one help with downloading FVRL’s Ditigal Content (eBooks, audiobooks and magazines) and accessing FVRL’s other digital databases. The eHelp Desk program takes place Mondays at the Chilliwack Library from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Book Clubs: Join library staff for lively discussions of selected titles. Chosen books will change monthly and copies are provided by the library. New members are welcome to join at any time, and registration is not required for this free program. The Chilliwack Library Book Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Yarrow Library Book Club meets on the third Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Friends of the Chilliwack Library: This volunteer organization supports the library through advocacy, fundraising and assistance with various projects and programs. The Puzzle Sale, Pet Parade and Quiz Night are all successful Friends initiatives. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 2 to 3 p.m. New friends are always welcome.
How’s That Made?: Join Susan Barclay Nichols from Chilliwack Community Services and learn to make paper crafts, fabric art, body care products and more. The class is for students in Grades 7 and up takes place on Thursdays (April 3, 17 and 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) at the Chilliwack Library. Teen Games Night: Teens and pre-teens can join Susan and Raymond on the second Thursday of the month for a great evening of board and card games including Apples to Apples, Escalation, Zombie Brains and more. Games Night takes place at the Chilliwack Library from 5 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, email Susan at email@example.com.
Genshiken: Join Raymond and his Genshiken group for a night of Japanese pop culture mayhem. It takes place on the third Wednesday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Due to the content of the media during the Japanese group, please be at least 13 to attend. Rated T for Teen: With Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Band, Wii Sports, Animal Crossing, retro-gaming on the Dreamcast, and the One Quarter Challenge, you bring your 'A' game and we bring the rest. Bring your Nintendo DS for portable multiplayer mayhem. This program takes place on the fourth Saturday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, email Raymond at email@example.com, or call 604-793-7238 or search for "Rated T for Teen" on Facebook to join our group and get updates.
Conversation Circles: Are you an adult trying to improve your spoken English? Would you like to meet new friends in the community? Your local libraries, in partnership with Chilliwack Community Services (604-393-3251), hosts free Conversation Circles. The events take place: Mondays at the Chilliwack Library (until April 28, excluding April 21) from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesdays at the Sardis Library (until April 30) from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and Thursday April 10 and 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Babytime: Make language fun! Start early with Babytime at the Chilliwack Library on Thursdays (April 3 to 24 from 10:30 to 11 a.m.). Help your baby develop speech and language skills - enjoy bouncing, singing and rhyming with stories. Babytime is a fun, social bonding activity for babies and caregivers. Registration begins March 15.
