Pleasant Valley Secondary School dance team wins
The hip hop swagger of farm town kids made a big impression on those from the big city.
Armstrong’s Pleasant Valley Secondary School Adrenaline Dance Team competed in Richmond on Family Day at the High School High Hip Hop Dance competition at the River Rock theatre, attended by 15 teams from high schools from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and PVSS.
Adrenaline, coached by teacher Janet Gillis, took first place in the Open and Hip Hop Divisions, and won the Top Dance Team trophy awarded to the team that receives the highest score in the entire competition.
“It was quite a big accomplishment for the team as they are all rookies, so to speak, as there was no team last year because I took a year off from teaching,” said Gillis.
The team is made up of 22 girls and three boys in Grades 11 and 12.
At the River Rock, PVSS placed first in the Open Division, a division for any style of dance other than hip hop.
“We performed an African-themed piece entitled Spirit of Freedom and scored 94 per cent,” said Gillis, who choreographed the dance along with Adrenaline alumni Alina Andrushko and Krystine Lucas. “The judges loved the high energy of the piece, the colorful costumes and the engaging performance of the dancers.”
In the Hip Hop division, Adrenaline placed first again with a score of 98 per cent for its nerd- themed piece based on the TV show The Big Bang Theory. The piece was choreographed by Gillis and alumna Cera Bollo.
“The judges loved the performance and our best comment was from one judge who said, ‘I would pay money to see that performance again,’” said Gillis. “The last time we won this division at this same competition was three years ago, so it was nice to win it again. We beat out 11 other schools to win this division, no small feat considering the Lower Mainland schools tend to have more swagger in the hip hop genre.”
Adrenaline dance team will unveil its newest piece themed around the ever popular book-movie The Hunger Games at its next competition.
