Develop cultural competence in 2014
The Immigrant Welcome Centre is launching the Building Cultural Competency Foundational Series.
The series consists of four free interactive workshops: Developing Self-Awareness, Feb. 13; Developing Cultural Awareness, Feb. 18; Developing Cross-Cultural Communication Skills, Feb. 26, 2014; and Developing Culturally Competent Behaviours, March 5. The workshops will provide not only theories, but also comprehensive and practical exercises for participants to build confidence in interacting with different cultures in real life. Last year in September, BCStats released the PEOPLE 2013 population projection report. Data show that Vancouver Island has an average annual growth of 0.7 per cent, the third highest among provincial regions. While other factors such as interprovincial migration and natural births could contribute to the population growth, it is predicted that international migration will continue to be the main factor.
“As our population is growing more diverse, community members have to be prepared for this trend. These interactive workshops provide opportunities for participants to meet new people, as well as enhance their ability to understand, communicate, and interact effectively with people across different cultures,” said Rachel Blaney, Executive Director of the Immigrant Welcome Centre.
Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. All sessions will be held from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Robron Centre. To register or for more information, call 250-830-0171 or employment@ImmigrantWelcome.ca
