City eyes new Aberdeen location for longboarding park
Kamloops longboarders will have a skate park of their own by next year, but it won't be in West Highlands Park.
The city had originally planned to add a longboard course to the park it's designing at the site of the former Aberdeen Hills Golf Links, but park planner Mike Doll said the neighbourhood does not want it there.
"We heard from some of the neighbours. They had concerns about noise, public safety and there was concern over housing sales with the new condo development that was going in," he said.
The condo developer, Mark Poulsen of DW Builders, suggested the city look at vacant land near Pacific Way elementary, which Doll said will be a good fit for the longboard park.
"There's a lot of topography there that will work and it's not close to any of the existing homes," he said. "I think it's got everything they need."
Doll said the city will work with the Kamloops Longboarding Club to plan the park this fall and hopes to have it open next year.
"Relatively speaking, it's a pretty easy thing to build," he said. "It's basically a strip of asphalt down a hill and then some amenities associated with it. It's not a tough project to actually build."
Money for the longboard course will come from the budget for the West Highlands Park project.
