Jay Zimmerman and Trevor Tougas put out fires for a living.

Now they're setting female hearts ablaze as featured firefighters in the new Hall of Flame calendar that raises funds for various organizations like the CKNW Orphans Fund and the Vancouver Firefighters' Charitable Society.

Zimmerman, 25, and Tougas, 26, are rookies with the New Westminster fire department. And they readily admit that doffing their turnout gear to pose for the calendar was like jumping into the deep end of firefighters' community service work. Especially when they were parading in front of 300 women at a Kitsilano pub who got to make the final vote on the 13 firefighters from departments around Metro Vancouver who should be a part of the calendar.

"It's different, for sure," said Zimmerman, who also found himself auctioned off for a date with one of the women as part of the selection night festivities.

"It was nerve-wracking," said Tougas.

Both men responded to a poster seeking volunteers for the calendar. They'd heard talk of it around the halls, knew some of their fellow firefighters had appeared in previous editions. After all, it's been around for 26 years and raised more than $1 million.

"You kinda know what you're getting into," said Zimmerman, who appears in the calendar as Mr. January.

To prepare for their photo shoots both men intensified their workouts in the gym to ensure they looked their best. Although nothing could prepare Tougas for the very public nature of his shoot as Mr. August, which was done in Vancouver's Gastown tourist area.

Their commitment to the project also doesn't end when they put their shirts back on. Over the course of the next year they'll appear at dozens of events around Metro Vancouver like signings, dinners, fundraisers, and the Women's Convention.

"They do warn you not to take it lightly," said Tougas.

In fact, for most of their reign, New West's calendar firefighters will be busy on their days off promoting its sales. Sorry ladies.

The Hall of Flame calendar is now available at select London Drugs, Save on Foods, and PriceSmart stores, as well as online at vancouverfirefighters.ca.
