Food drive sets heavy target
In mid-September over each of the past two years, more than 100 volunteers collected more than 6,000 pounds of food donated by the generous citizens for the Prince George food bank.
This year the group hopes to nearly double the magnitude of the effort, targeting more than 10,000 pounds of food. The 2013 event will run this coming week, September 9-14.
The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) began as a local effort by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve their less-fortunate neighbours in the city of Burnaby in 2009, and expanded to other areas of the Province, including Prince George in 2011. Now entering its 3rd year in Prince George, our multi-faith project has expanded to include the Salvation Army and members of the Prince George Muslim Association.
The BCTFD is a non-denominational project and is open to all interested individuals, community groups, religious organizations, businesses or others who wish to join us in helping attend to the needs of the hungry. All of its partners and volunteers are required to abide by the principles and regulations that underpin the project:
Its fundamental purpose is to raise as much material and financial support for local food banks as possible.
• Those participating in the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive may not impose ulterior agendas on any of our events. Our volunteers do not proselytize, sell, or promote any products or ideas which are not directly tied to our fundamental purpose.
• The BCTFD does not accept any direct forms of government assistance.
•It also recognizes that principles of charity and selflessness are best served by working for a good cause without expectation of material reward. As such, our project does not offer compensation for the value of any labor performed by its officers or volunteers.
• In order to protect against fraud and other abuses, it conforms to Food Banks British Columbia’s code of ethics. Most specifically, they do not solicit cash contributions door-to-door.
