Sharpest grilled cheese crowned in West Van next Saturday
Ambleside is about to get real cheese-y Saturday, Sept. 7 with eight teams competing in the first ever Grilled Cheese Invitational.
Using eclectic ingredients such as lobster, Okanagan peaches, bacon jam and short ribs, the teams will be making sandwiches ranging from classic to unique from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fresh Street Market on the 1600-block of Marine Drive in West Van.
Local vendors and Fresh St. Market staff are cooking up 3,600 grilled cheese to sample and the sharpest will be crowned by chef Karen Barnaby and former BC Lions Lui Passaglia. Tickets are $5 with proceeds going to Lions Gate Hospital.
Teams are tasked with making a classic grilled cheese and an "anything goes" variation, and are encouraged to use local ingredients.
The winning creation will be a permanent addition to the market's sandwich bar. Customers can also vote for their favourite sandwich for the People's Choice Award.
Samples of craft beer from the 16th Street Liquor Store will be paired with the sandwiches from noon to 3 p.m.
