The care for cancer
It struck me the other day when I heard yet another instance, that at this moment in my life I know of at least five people close to me and my family who are receiving treatment for cancer at Richmond Hospital.
Cancer is a difficult word to hear and I know I’m not alone in thinking that. But when I think of the care delivered here at the Cancer Care Clinic at Richmond Hospital, there are other words that quickly spring to mind to take its place. Expertise. Dedication. Compassion. And the one word above all. Hope.
Richmond Hospital’s Cancer Care Clinic offers patients and their families the hope and care required.
Whether it’s for breast cancer, colon cancer or lung cancer, to name just a few of the many cancers treated here, Richmond Hospital’s Cancer Care Clinic has a deserved reputation as a skilled, committed and truly caring team here for you and your family. Recently the clinic welcomed the addition of Dr. Jeremy Ho, a talented second oncologist, to be able to help more patients, offer the latest therapies and treatments and anticipate the growing needs of Richmond’s diverse and expanding population.
I would like to introduce you to Dr. John Yun (in photograph), oncologist at the Cancer Care Clinic at Richmond Hospital. Dr. Yun arrived here in 1995. He is a Richmond resident and father of six, and as part of the tremendous team at the Cancer Care Clinic, he shares how the highly specialized staff go beyond treating disease to help patients and families through a difficult time and offer both compassion and hope.
“When a person finds out that they have cancer, it’s often a life-changing experience and their life may never be the same,” says Dr. Yun. “When they come to see me, they want someone who has experience and expertise and they want the confidence that this expert in front of them has their best interests at heart. They want help to make good informed choices and they want assurance.
“You could be a really nice doctor, but ultimately, you need to be excellent in your professional knowledge and expertise. That’s a given. But in order to deliver the very best, you need that human relationship. You treat people as you want to be treated—as a human being. The biggest fear of many patients is being objectified, feeling they’re just one person out of many hundreds of people with this problem. I try to listen to them and become a friend.”
This is an approach shared by the entire team at the Cancer Care Clinic, says Dr. Yun.
“I appreciate the other dedicated professionals I work with, like the nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workers and other specialists like radiologists and palliative care doctors. That’s one thing I notice here in our clinic. All staff treat people as people, not as statistics. There is something therapeutic about the human relationship and patients appreciate that.
“For us, the bottom line is our patients and their well being. Patients are able to receive diagnosis, the latest therapies and expertise close to home. As a team and with the addition of Dr. Jeremy Ho, we are pleased to provide more of this excellence of care right here in Richmond.”
