Spawning channels to be restored along Hopedale Slough
Salmon spawning restoration efforts will be underway along the Hopedale Slough by Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition next week in Yarrow.
The watershed group and its partners will be enhancing and restoring salmon spawning and rearing channels from Aug. 19-28.
The goal is extending the length of a spawning channel to provide more aquatic habitat and sustained fresh water to salmon and the downstream reaches of this waterway, which is key during hot, dry summer months.
"This restoration will involve the use of heavy equipment and machinery," said spokesperson Natashia Cox. "The Vedder South trail will still be open to the public so trail users are advised to read the caution signs and keep their distance from machinery during this time."
In the fall FVWC will be replanting this stream channel with native vegetation. Volunteer community members are needed to help plant and protect trees and shrubs and enhance the area for wildlife.
If you are interested in learning more about the restoration and/or volunteering for the replanting event, and/or who we are - please contact Natashia Cox at firstname.lastname@example.org or Rachel Drennan at Rachel@fvwc.ca.
"We thank everyone for their support as we all work together to create Healthy Watersheds and Healthy Communities across the Fraser Valley."
