SLICE OF LIFE: July 19-July 25


The Straiton Heritage Day Tea takes place Saturday, July 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Straiton Hall, 4698 Sumas Mtn. Rd. There will be local history displays, pioneer tools and toys to try out, tea and scones, as well as articles and ads from newspapers in the 1970s. There will also be a display on Straiton Elementary, now more than 100 years old. Admission is free. A “boot sale,” including antiques and household goods, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside the hall. Info: 604-852-4278


Karaoke is held every Friday from 8 p.m. to closing at the Abbotsford branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (2513 West Railway).


Janine the Jenius visits Abbotsford Community Library (33555 Bevan Ave.) on Friday, July 19 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. and Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way) on Tuesday, July 23 from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Participants are asked to join Janine in the Science Works lab and explore what makes things go up, up and away. Goats Pride Dairy (30854 Olund Rd.) holds an open house on Saturday, July 20 from noon to 4 p.m. The event includes face painting, goat cart rides, storytelling, trail walks, visits with the goats, ice cream making, and milking demonstrations. Info: Jo-Ann or Barbara at 604-854-6261


The Baha’i community in Abbotsford holds a free multi-faith dinner, devotional and discussion on Saturday, July 20 at 6 p.m. at the Abbotsford Social Activity Association drop-in centre (2631 Cyril St.). No collection is taken. Everyone is welcome.


Abbotsford Community Services hosts its annual Seniors Picnic in the Park  on Monday, July 29 at Mill Lake Park (Bevan Street entrance). Cost is $5. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by July 25 to Nancy Deba at 604-870-3764 or

The Employment Mentors’ Program at Abbotsford Community Services holds an orientation session for newcomers on Thursday, July 25 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at 2420 Montrose Ave. The program assists immigrants to Canada with gaining a professional network through business mentorship experiences. The Brits Group meets three times a month in Abbotsford. The group gets together the first Wednesday of each month at noon at the legion (2513 West Railway), the third Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Jo Jo’s Fish and Chips (32700 George Ferguson Way) and the last Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the ABC Restaurant (32080 Marshall Rd.).
