Abbotsford Middle School held its public speaking semi-finals on Thursday, featuring nine students from Grades 6, 7 and 8.

The best student from each grade will move on to the district's public speaking event.

Mayor Bruce Banman, superintendent Kevin Godden, and former Canucks player Ryan Walter, judged the competition.

Graeme Kemp, a Grade 6 teacher at Abbotsford Middle School, said they brought in prominent judges because the school is "exceptionally proud" of the students, who have spent about two months practicing their speeches.

The speeches covered a variety of topics, including the effects of smoking, life as a Canucks fan and how to give a proper speech.

District finals will be held in April, with Grade 5 students competing on Monday, April 22, Grades 6 and 7 on Tuesday, April 23 and Grade 8 on Wednesday, April 24.
