Penticton releases new recreation guide

The City of Penticton Recreation Department launches the new Recreation Guide today to help residents and families get fit, have fun and plan their spring and summer activities – all for good value.

One especially good value is Try it for Free Week, which is back by popular demand from April 2 to 7, with free programs to test the water of the Penticton Community Centre without committing to a class. Soon-to-be fitness buffs can try the upgraded Fitness Room — complete with new equipment and accessories that are sure to make any workout challenging and effective — for free April 2 to 7.

The Spring/Summer Recreation Guide combines three key seasons of activity: spring, spring break and summer. Swimming lessons can be booked for both spring and summer, allowing parents to create schedules all the way through to the end of August.

A new addition to the recreation guide is Active, a new way to play and save at the Penticton Community Centre. The program can save members between 10 and 15 per cent on Fitness Room and pool memberships, and also qualifies them for five days of early registration — giving them a head start to sign up for popular programs. The year-long Active memberships have three categories: Active Family, Active Fitness Fanatic (individual) or Active Value (individual).

The highlight of any child’s summer break is a week-long JCI Summer Day Camp or any of the summer classes available in arts, dance and activities. The Community Centre also offers Keeners, before and after camp care for children needing all-day programs. JCI Day Camps in 2012 were the Recreation Department’s most successful to date, posting a 97-per-cent fill rate with over 520 registrations. Interested parents should register soon to secure spots for their children.

There are a host of new programs for preschoolers and children like summer skating lessons, as well as power skating, Junior Chefs, the Perfect Easter Party, Girls Expanding Boundaries 2, Skaha Bluffs Eco-Tour and more.

Adults can get their groove going with new fitness class Morning Mix-up or sign up for popular programs like tai chi, yoga and Zumba. Those looking to get outside can find their green thumb with Maximum Water Minimum Green, and Brush Cuts and Flat Tops – essential gardening classes for everyone.
