Transit rally at Central City Plaza
The Surrey Citizens Transportation Initiative is hosting a Surrey Transit Rally, Feb. 26 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Central City Plaza (North entrance to SFU campus).
The public is invited to come join in the call for increased transit service in Surrey. There will be engaging speakers, music, and a march.
The Surrey Citizens Transportation Initiative was established in 2009 following the battle to save Bear Creek Park –Surrey’s signature municipal park. The successful effort prevented the severing of the park by an extension of 84 Avenue.
This experience showed concerned citizens and Surrey City Hall that both parties needed to communicate at a higher level. Surrey CiTI was created to address this need.
Public, private and commercial transportation has become a huge issue in Surrey and Metro Vancouver due to population growth, traffic gridlock, and increased greenhouse gas and other pollutants. The rapid expansion of marine ports has placed additional pressure on road infrastructures. Aging infrastructures add to future challenges.
Citizen input into transportation decisions, such as funding of TransLink, is critical to develop transportation systems that meet the needs of Surrey citizens yet also meet the needs of British Columbia and Canada.
Surrey CiTI provides a venue for public participation to solve these pressing transportation challenges.
The agenda for the transit fall is as follows:
• 3:30-4:15 p.m. – Introduction, music and speakers;
• 4:15-5:00 p.m. –March and music;
• 5-5:30 p.m. – Music, speakers and wind-up.
