Ever wondered if you can grow food over fall and winter? Wish you knew what kinds of edible plants do well in our area? Wondered how you and your family could live more sustainably?

Become inspired for spring, and find out the answers at Wildsight’s Grow For It: Local Food & Garden Forum at Centre 64 in Kimberley.

Over the weekend of March 15th to the 17th, foodies, experts and enthusiasts will get together to discuss subjects such as permaculture, community gardening, local food systems and more.

Toby Hemenway, best-selling author and teacher, will be on hand to discuss the ins and outs of permaculture and will lead a full day workshop. Guest speakers Jon Steinman, a local food and farming advocate, and Allison Candy, education coordinator for the Invermere Groundswell Community Greenhouse, will fill you in on some grassroots local food movements.

“I’m so excited about this event,” said program coordinator, Jessica Windle. “The speakers we have lined up are amazing and they offer such realistic and accessible ideas for ways we can become more self sufficient as families and communities.”

She said that the weekend will provide an opportunity for anyone who is interested - new gardeners, seasoned green thumbs or even the passionate foodie - to get together to learn and network.

“We’re fired up about the amazing initiatives taking place in our region, and think this is the start of something wonderful,” she said. “Its great that things as enjoyable as gardening and permaculture have the potential to positively impact the planet, our health, and even our economy.”

The weekend offers a flexible schedule of events, and participants can pick and choose according to time and budget. The event kicks off with a foodie film night on Friday. Guest speakers, breakout discussions and lunch are featured on Saturday, culminating with a networking feast at The Old Bauernhaus in the evening. On Sunday, you can take advantage of a full day permaculture workshop with Toby Hemenway.
